Ms. Rao gave the class ten seconds to say whether 512 x 48 was closer to 20,000 or 30,000, no pencils allowed.

Kabir, who could multiply exactly on paper in two minutes, was still stuck when time ran out.

Anaya, who rounded first, called "25,000-ish" in three seconds — and the real answer was 24,576.

The Story

Ms. Rao held up a stopwatch. "Ten seconds. Is 512 times 48 closer to twenty thousand or thirty thousand? No exact working, just a fast guess." Kabir immediately reached for his pencil out of habit and started lining up the digits for long multiplication. Anaya instead rounded 512 down to 500 and 48 up to 50, multiplied those round numbers in her head — 500 x 50 = 25,000 — and called out "About twenty-five thousand!" before Kabir had even finished writing the first row.

The timer beeped. Kabir was only halfway through his long multiplication. Ms. Rao asked the class to now find the exact answer properly, on paper, and check it against Anaya's guess. It came to 24,576. "Anaya's estimate was off by less than five hundred, out of twenty-five thousand," said Ms. Rao. "Close enough to know instantly that the answer isn't twenty thousand or thirty thousand."

Kabir pointed out his exact answer was obviously more useful, since it was precise. "You're right — for a bill you're paying, you want exact," Ms. Rao agreed. "But for checking whether an answer is roughly sane, or for a fast decision with no time to spare, an estimate beats a slow exact answer that hasn't finished yet."

She then showed the trick behind Anaya's speed: round each number to its nearest convenient value — often the nearest ten, hundred, or leading digit — before combining them. Kabir tried it on 289 + 411: round to 300 + 400 = 700. The real total, 700 exactly, matched perfectly this time. "Rounding doesn't always land exactly," said Ms. Rao, "but it always gets you close, fast — and fast is sometimes exactly what a problem needs."

So What Just Happened?

Estimation means rounding numbers to convenient values before calculating, to get a fast, approximately correct answer instead of a slow, exact one. It is used to sanity-check a real answer or to decide quickly when precision isn't needed.

The most common method is rounding each number to its nearest ten, hundred, or leading digit, then doing the easier calculation with the rounded numbers.

An estimate is not a wrong answer — it is a different, faster kind of answer, useful for checking whether an exact calculation is roughly correct, or for situations too fast for exact working.
