Ms. Rao handed Kabir and Anaya two wooden strips joined by a pin at one end, and told them to make every angle they could think of before the bell rang.
No protractor. Just two strips of wood and a shared pin.
By the end of the lesson they had built a right angle, a straight line, and a full turn — all from the same two sticks.
Ms. Rao pinned two wooden strips together at one end, so they could swing open and shut like a pair of scissors. "Open them however you like, and tell me what you've made." Anaya held the strips flat, pointing in exactly opposite directions — a straight line, no bend at all. Kabir opened his strips until they formed a perfect corner, like the edge of a book. "That's a right angle," said Ms. Rao. "Exactly a quarter of a full turn."
They kept experimenting. Closing the strips almost all the way, until they nearly touched, made a tiny sliver of an angle — an acute angle, smaller than a right angle. Opening them wider than the right angle but not all the way to a straight line made a wider gap — an obtuse angle, bigger than a right angle but smaller than a straight one. Anaya spun her strip all the way around, back to where it started, and called that a full turn — a complete circle's worth of opening.
Kabir noticed something: every angle they'd built was really just two lines (or line segments) meeting at a single shared point, the pin. "The pin is the important part," Ms. Rao confirmed, "we call it the vertex. And the two strips are the arms of the angle." She had them measure their right angle against the corner of a textbook, confirming it matched exactly — a right angle always measures 90 degrees.
By the end of class, they had a working collection: acute (under 90°), right (exactly 90°), obtuse (between 90° and 180°), straight (exactly 180°), and a full turn (360°). Ms. Rao pointed out the whole set came from nothing more than two wooden strips and one pin, opened to different amounts — angles were never about a special shape, just about how far two arms had turned apart from a shared vertex.
An angle is formed where two lines or line segments meet at a shared point called the vertex. The two lines are called the arms of the angle, and the size of the angle measures how far apart the arms have opened, in degrees.
Angles are named by their size: acute (less than 90°), right (exactly 90°), obtuse (more than 90° but less than 180°), straight (exactly 180°, a flat line), and reflex (more than 180° but less than 360°). A full turn is exactly 360°.
A line extends forever in both directions with no endpoints, while a line segment has two definite endpoints, and a ray has one endpoint and extends forever in only one direction — all three can form the arms of an angle where they meet another line at a vertex.

Find five real angles around your home (a door opened partway, a clock's hands, a laptop screen) and classify each as acute, right, obtuse, or straight.
